VeriAnon: ZK-Powered Privacy Whistleblower Platform

💡 Inspiration

In today's corporate and public sectors, whistleblowers face immense risks, including career ruin and personal safety threats. Traditional reporting systems claim to be anonymous but still log IP addresses, device fingerprints, and metadata. We wanted to build a truly untraceable, secure platform where truth can be exposed without fear, powered by the cutting-edge privacy primitives of the Midnight Network.

🛡️ How We Built It & Core Logic

VeriAnon splits data management into public and private states using Midnight’s architectural philosophy:

  1. Local AI Sanitization: Before submission, an integrated model strips all personal metadata, signatures, and device logs from the evidence files locally.
  2. Zero-Knowledge Proofs: We use ZK-SNARKs simulation to generate a cryptographic proof on the user's device. This proof mathematically verifies that the user is an authorized entity with valid data, without revealing their identity on-chain.

🚀 Advanced Tokenomics & Scalability (Next-Level Scope)

To ensure the platform is bulletproof for real-world enterprise deployment, we designed two future-ready systems:

  • Gasless Privacy via DUST Tokens: Blockchain execution requires gas fees, which can trace back to a user's crypto wallet. VeriAnon utilizes Midnight's DUST token ecosystem combined with a Gas Tank Smart Contract that pays the transaction fees on behalf of the whistleblower, maintaining complete economic anonymity.
  • Multi-Authority Decryption Keys: To prevent data leaks, the encrypted public reports cannot be accessed by any single entity. We implement a decentralized authorization model using Shamir's Secret Sharing. The decryption key is split between multiple trusted oversight bodies (e.g., Global Investigative Journalism Networks and legal boards). The data decrypts only when a threshold of verified entities consensus is reached.

🧠 Challenges We Faced & Learnings

As a student developer, diving into cryptographic zero-knowledge proofs and blockchain privacy states was a massive learning curve. Balancing user friendliness with hardcore cybersecurity protocols was challenging, but it taught me how powerful Midnight's TypeScript-based Compact environment can be for real-world social impact projects.
