Inspiration
Nicaragua, is a land of incredible natural beauty and biodiversity, yet often, this richness goes undocumented and unprotected at a community level. We were inspired by the passion of our fellow citizens who care deeply about our environment but lack accessible tools to contribute directly. We envisioned a platform that could bridge this gap, empowering everyday Nicaraguans to become citizen scientists, share their discoveries, and collectively stand up for our natural heritage. Our goal is to transform passive appreciation into active participation, creating a digital ecosystem as vibrant as Nicaragua's own.
What it does
VerdeNica is a comprehensive, community-driven web platform designed to celebrate, document, and protect Nicaragua's unique flora and fauna. Here's what users can do:
Publish Biodiversity Sightings: Users can upload detailed posts about plants and animals they encounter, complete with descriptions, locations, and personal observations, building a rich, localized database.
AI-Powered Species Identification: A core feature allows users to upload an image of a plant or animal. Our system then uses artificial intelligence to identify the species and provide immediate, descriptive information, making biodiversity accessible to everyone.
Engage in a Community Forum: A dedicated forum provides a space for users to discuss environmental topics, share ideas, ask questions, and collaborate on conservation initiatives.
Report Climate Violations: Users can discreetly or publicly report environmental abuses and climate violations, providing a crucial channel for advocacy and accountability.
Free and Accessible: VerdeNica is entirely free to use, fostering an inclusive environment for all Nicaraguans to participate.
How we built it
We built VerdeNica with a focus on user experience and robust functionality, leveraging a powerful and familiar set of tools. For the frontend, we crafted a dynamic and intuitive interface using standard web technologies: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, enhanced with Bootstrap for responsive design, ensuring a seamless experience across various devices. The core logic and backend were developed using Python with the Flask microframework, allowing us to build a lightweight, efficient, and scalable API to handle user data, publications, and forum interactions. We chose MySQL as our database for its reliability, widespread adoption, and strong support for relational data, perfectly suited for managing our biodiversity records. The heart of our unique identification feature lies in our AI integration, where we leveraged TensorFlow to develop and implement our image recognition model, allowing accurate species identification directly within the platform.
Challenges we ran into
Developing VerdeNica within the hackathon's tight timeframe presented several challenges. Integrating the AI image recognition was particularly complex; training an accurate model with limited time and a specific dataset required significant optimization and troubleshooting. We also faced hurdles in designing a scalable database schema that could handle diverse biodiversity data and user contributions efficiently. Crafting a seamless and intuitive user interface that caters to both tech-savvy and novice users, while handling image uploads and forum interactions, demanded careful planning and iterative design. Finally, ensuring robust security measures for user data and reporting features was a continuous priority.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud to have built a functional prototype of VerdeNica that truly addresses a pressing need in Nicaragua. Successfully implementing the AI-powered image recognition is a major achievement, as it's a key differentiator and a powerful tool for users. We're also very proud of the intuitive user experience we've crafted, making complex biodiversity information accessible and engaging. Seeing the core features, from publications to the forum and reporting tools, come together into a cohesive platform within such a short period is a testament to our team's dedication and collaborative spirit.
What we learned
This hackathon journey taught us immense lessons in rapid development, problem-solving under pressure, and the power of teamwork. We gained valuable insights into optimizing AI models for practical applications and the nuances of integrating them into a full-stack platform. We deepened our understanding of database design for dynamic content and the importance of user-centric design in fostering community engagement. Most importantly, we reaffirmed our belief in the power of technology to empower communities and contribute positively to environmental conservation.
What's next for VerdeNica
Our hackathon project is just the beginning for VerdeNica. Next, we plan to significantly expand our AI model's accuracy by curating a larger, more diverse dataset of Nicaraguan flora and fauna. We aim to implement gamification features like badges and leaderboards to further incentivize user contributions and engagement. Developing a dedicated mobile application is a high priority to ensure even easier access and on-the-go image uploads. We'll also seek partnerships with local environmental organizations and experts to verify data and enrich our platform with validated scientific information, ensuring VerdeNica becomes the definitive community resource for Nicaragua's natural world.
