Inspiration

Living in the vibrant, bustling cities of Morocco, we are inspired daily by our community's energy. However, we also face the daily challenges of traffic congestion and its impact on our air quality. We were inspired by the global movement towards sustainable living and wanted to bring a practical solution to our home. The idea for Verde Velo was born from a simple vision: to see our streets filled with more bicycles than cars, contributing to cleaner air, quieter neighborhoods, and a healthier connection to our environment. This project is our answer to the question, "How can we, as engineering students, help build the sustainable cities of tomorrow?

What it does

Verde Velo is a user-friendly mobile application that makes renting a bicycle effortless. At its core, the app provides a real-time map showing all available bikes nearby. With just a few taps, a user can select a bike, unlock it by scanning a QR code, and start their ride. The app tracks the ride duration and cost, handling payments seamlessly once the bike is locked at any designated spot. It's designed to be the most convenient option for short commutes, leisurely rides, or a quick trip across campus, all while promoting a green, carbon-free mode of transport.

How we built it

We approached this project with a full-stack development mindset.

The Mobile App: We opted for a cross-platform framework like React Native to build a consistent experience for both iOS and Android users from a single codebase. The interface was designed to be clean, intuitive, and fast. The Backend: Our server was built using Node.js with the Express framework, creating a robust API to handle user authentication, bike locations, and payment processing. The Database: We used PostgreSQL with the PostGIS extension to efficiently store and query geospatial data, which is crucial for accurately mapping our bike fleet in real-time. Hardware Integration: The app communicates with custom IoT-enabled smart locks on each bike via Bluetooth and our backend API. This allows for the secure locking and unlocking mechanism that is central to our service.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest hurdles was the hardware-software integration. Ensuring a reliable, low-latency connection between a user's smartphone and the bike's smart lock was a complex task that required extensive testing and debugging. Another significant challenge was designing a system to be both durable and resistant to vandalism, a practical concern for any public-facing hardware. Finally, creating a dynamic pricing and payment system that is secure, compliant, and easy for the user took careful planning and research into local payment gateway solutions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud of developing a fully functional end-to-end prototype. Seeing a user successfully find, unlock, and ride a bike using only the app we built from scratch was a major milestone. We managed to create a fluid user interface that simplifies the entire rental process down to a few seconds. Most importantly, we're proud of creating a project that doesn't just fulfill a technical challenge but also embodies our values and offers a positive contribution to our community.

What we learned

This project has been an immense learning experience. Technically, we moved beyond theory and gained hands-on skills in mobile development, backend architecture, and IoT communication. We learned how to manage a complex project, breaking it down into achievable tasks and collaborating effectively as a team. Critically, we learned the importance of user feedback in shaping a product that is not just functional but also enjoyable and easy to use.

What's next for Verde Velo

The journey is just beginning. Our immediate next step is to launch a pilot program on a university campus, like ENSA Khouribga, to gather real-world usage data and user feedback. Following that, we aim to partner with local municipalities to strategically place bike stations in key urban areas. We plan to introduce features like monthly subscription models, guided city-tour routes, and corporate wellness partnerships to expand our user base and further our mission for a greener, more cycle-friendly Morocco.
