Inspiration

Student elections and governance in many universities still rely on systems that are difficult to verify and often lack transparency. Students rarely have a way to independently confirm election results or track how student union funds are spent. I wanted to build something that gives students confidence that every vote counts and every governance decision is accountable. Instead of using blockchain just because it is popular, I wanted to use it to solve a real problem.

What it does

Vera is a decentralized student governance platform that combines secure student elections with DAO-based governance. The platform allows verified students to vote in elections, submit proposals, participate in referendums, and monitor student union finances through a transparent treasury. Every governance activity is recorded on the blockchain, creating a permanent and verifiable history while keeping voting secure.

How we built it

I designed Vera around a blockchain-powered governance model. The platform starts with student identity verification before giving each eligible student a unique voting credential. The governance system includes election management, proposal voting, treasury tracking, and organization management. Smart contracts handle governance rules while the web application provides a simple interface for students and administrators to interact with the platform.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing transparency with privacy. Election data should be publicly verifiable, but individual votes must remain private. Another challenge was making blockchain technology easy to use. Many students are not familiar with crypto wallets, so the platform needs a simple onboarding experience that feels like any normal web application. Designing governance rules such as voting thresholds, proposal requirements, and committee management also required careful planning.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud that Vera focuses on solving an actual problem instead of building blockchain for its own sake. The project combines student elections, governance, proposal management, and financial transparency into one platform. It creates a system where students can actively participate in decision making while every important action remains transparent and verifiable.

What we learned

Building Vera showed me that good governance is not just about technology. It is about trust, participation, and accountability. I also learned that blockchain works best when it stays behind the scenes. The real value is not the technology itself but the confidence it gives users that the system is fair and cannot be manipulated.

What's next for Vera

The next step is to build a working MVP with student verification, secure elections, proposal voting, and a transparent treasury. After that, I plan to expand Vera with governance tools for student clubs, reputation-based participation, decentralized student identities, and privacy-preserving voting. My long-term goal is to make Vera the standard platform for transparent student governance across universities.
