Inspiration

As the COVID19 pandemic goes on, we have built an inclusive platform that aims to create a safe space for trans and non-binary people and helps you connect with folks all around the world and build a community, on the occasion of Pride Month!

What it does

Features-

  1. A powerful and secure login functionality
  2. An educational questionnaire to spread awareness and keeping it as a safe-space
  3. A chatroom for you to connect with people around the world
  4. An article page for you to share your powerful stories and get inspired from other's stories

How we built it

  1. Designed a beautiful prototype and UI using Canva and Nicepage
  2. Used React.js and React-bootstrap to create a functional frontend
  3. Made a powerful backend using Node.js, Express.js and GraphQL
  4. Used GCP's Firebase for Authentication and Database
  5. Use Apollo Server subscriptions for Chatrooms and Realtime Database to store
  6. Used GCP's Firestore as a database for our articles
  7. Deployed our frontend on Heroku, Deployed our backend on Google Cloud Platform

Challenges we ran into

  1. Deploying on a particular domain.
  2. Dealing with React with no prior experience
  3. Authentication took time

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. We got to learn about GraphQL
  2. We made a live chat app
  3. Able to work as a team and complete this project
  4. deployed our project succesfully
  5. Designed a beautiful interface

What we learned

  1. Learned how to use React and GraphQL.
  2. Learned about the LGBTQ+ community

What's next for Velvet Cafe&Bar

  1. Develop iOS and android application of this web application.
  2. Improve the user experience in the chat room.
  3. Improve the overall UI/UX
  4. Add more features like video calls with peers.
  5. Add like and comment functionality in articles
  6. Add moderation in chatrooms
  7. Add dating functionality
