Inspiration

As autonomous agents conduct commercial transactions on behalf of users and businesses, financial safety and deterministic invariant verification become critical. Traditional payment gateways expect humans to verify receipts, but agentic commerce requires programmatic proof that cryptographic conditions were satisfied before a capture or disbursement occurs. VELQIRIS PayPal AI Evidence Gate was designed to bridge PayPal's developer APIs with agentic verification logic.

What it does

  • PayPal Sandbox Integration: Interfaces with the official PayPal Orders and Webhooks v2 REST APIs.
  • Pre-Execution Evidence Gate: Verifies multi-venue cryptographic consensus and order integrity before authorizing agent payments.
  • Live Verified Sandbox Execution: Demonstrated end-to-end sandbox order creation (Verified Sandbox Order ID: 5LY98372X4704114N, App ID: APP-8PD12437MX953783S).
  • Fail-Closed Security: Header-only or invalid webhook payloads fail closed automatically, preventing unverified state mutations.

How we built it

Challenges we ran into

Ensuring that autonomous AI agents cannot execute transactions with stale or mock pricing data required implementing strict provenance checks across all telemetry sources prior to invoking the PayPal Orders API.

Accomplishments that we are proud of

  • Successfully created and verified live sandbox orders with zero real capital expenditure.
  • Deterministic fail-closed error handling across all webhook ingestion paths.
  • Interactive demo enabling judges to inspect telemetry and order payloads in real-time.

What we learned

Payment rails for autonomous agents must treat evidence verification as a prerequisite to authorization rather than a post-facto audit step.

What is next

Extending the evidence gate to support automated agent micro-subscriptions and verifiable multi-party escrow workflows using PayPal's recurring payments architecture.
