Inspiration

Stress is not uncommon nowadays. Each one of us has experienced a time of stress at least once in our lives. Modern technology allows us to relieve our stress through various social media platforms, which were proven to be addictive and consume far more free time than we would expect them to. We wanted to create a simple, stress-relieving game with a unique and bright design to be an alternative.

What it does

VelociTapper is an idle game with a retro design and cute dinosaurs! The player can observe the development of an adult dinosaur, starting from an egg hatching and through his teen years, by tapping on the screen. Of course, each period of the dinosaur's life takes longer, but the player has various helpers at each level, like a clicker upgrade or auto-tapper, to keep the story going. For each upgrade, the player would pay with the dino currency, rocks, available in larger abundance at each level.

How we built it

We used the Unity game engine to build the game with scripts in C# and graphics made with Gimp.

Challenges we ran into

Our team was new to Unity and the technology it requires. We found it extremely challenging to get started: to put the first graphics in the editor and to add the first scripts. With time, we got more used to that. However, as designs became more complex, every new error message became increasingly more complicated, taking us more time to fix them.

Additionally, this was the first time for every member of our team to share Git version control with the team. We spent significant time setting up version control for our project and resolving merge conflicts. On our journey of getting more familiar with git, we were sure that we lost our project on multiple occasions. However, we learned a great deal each time we found a way to rehabilitate our code (or parts of it).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of how our work turned out! We implemented all the required features for our game and a few optional features that we set aside in case we had the time to finish them. We are very impressed by what we have learned in less than a day of working with new technology and a team of people we just met. We are proud of how we divided the work and collaborated with each other to finish a project in less than 24 hours, while individually, this project would have taken us about a week to complete.

What we learned

Besides the technology we used to create the game and version control, we learned a lot about teamwork. Our group of four was formed in Slack a day before the hackathon. We all had different technical skills and project interests. However, we were able to coordinate our thought and compromise our ideas to come up with a project that we all loved. Then, despite initially being strangers, we worked together, shared our knowledge, helped each other, and genuinely had fun while working on a project. The final product of our efforts is a collage of creative ideas each team member brought in. We all agree that we learned a great deal about the importance of collaboration and teamwork and we are extremely proud of what we achieved.

What's next for VelociTapper

We had a long list of features that we were yet to implement, given more time. Some include introducing dinosaur food sources to increase the tapping speed, dinosaurs, and different backgrounds. In the future, we will also see our game available online and locally on iOS and Android mobile devices and personal computers.
