Veil — Project Story

Share Without Fear

Inspiration

At Thapar Institute, many freshers struggle to find a friend group during their early weeks.
The pressure to fit in, the fear of judgment, and the unfamiliar environment often push students into emotional isolation.

This emotional loop typically leads to:

[ Stress + Overthinking + Loneliness → Emotional Decline ]

We wanted to create a platform where students could express themselves freely, connect with peers, and feel safe — even before they form their own social circle.

This is how Veil began:
A campus-exclusive anonymous space built to help students share, support, and connect without fear.

What it does

Veil is a verified, anonymous, and emotionally safe communication platform for Thapar students. It allows them to:

  • Share thoughts anonymously
  • Join organized discussion channels (academics, mental health, hobbies, events, confessions)
  • Track emotions using a mood journal
  • Access 24/7 AI emotional support
  • Use NFT-style avatars to stay anonymous but expressive
  • Stay protected through AI-powered toxic content filtering
  • Encourage positivity through ratings, leaderboards, and daily rewards

How we built it

We followed a structured, user-centered process.

1. Research

We spoke to students, studied fresher challenges, and identified emotional triggers like insecurity, hesitation, social pressure, and fear of speaking up.

2. Design

We designed Veil for both iOS and Android, ensuring a native experience on each platform.

iOS Design

  • Rounded, minimalistic components
  • Smooth animations and gestures
  • Soft shadows and depth

Android Design

  • Material Design guidelines
  • Structured elevation and spacing
  • Familiar Android navigation patterns

General Design Foundations

  • Purple and black calming theme
  • Poppins font for clarity
  • Clean card layouts
  • Minimalistic screens for emotional comfort

3. Prototype

  • UX flows created in Figma
  • Animations and micro-interactions created in Framer
  • Feature inspiration from:
    • Discord → Channels
    • WeChat → Avatars
    • Mental health apps → Journals

4. System Planning

  • Firebase authentication using Thapar email
  • NLP-based toxicity filter
  • AI chatbot for emotional support
  • Mood tracking with analytics and trends

Challenges we ran into

  • Balancing anonymity and accountability
  • Designing a space that supports mental well-being
  • Keeping conversations safe without restricting free speech
  • Organizing multiple features while maintaining a clean UI
  • Managing sensitive emotional content
  • Ensuring the app feels comforting, not overwhelming

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Addressing a real emotional and social need at Thapar
  • Building a smooth cross-platform (iOS + Android) experience
  • Combining anonymous posting, mood tracking, and AI support
  • Creating an inclusive space where shy students feel comfortable
  • Designing a supportive, empathy-driven community
  • Maintaining safe conversations via strong AI moderation

What we learned

  • Emotional design requires empathy
  • Students need community more than they express
  • Anonymous platforms must balance:

[ Freedom of Expression ↔ Safety and Moderation ]

  • Simple UI reduces mental load and builds trust
  • AI can meaningfully support emotional well-being
  • Moderation systems are crucial for anonymous platforms

What's next for Veil – Thapar Exclusive Anonymous Platform

  • Collaborations with campus clubs and events
  • Personalized AI well-being insights
  • Advanced customizable NFT avatars
  • Partnership with Thapar’s counseling cell
  • Academic channels for notes, queries, and study support
  • Voice-based anonymous chat rooms
  • Expansion to other universities
  • Building a dedicated Veil Campus Community
