VEIL
Your conversations. Your memories. Your privacy.
The Story Behind Veil
We live in a world where sharing has become effortless. A photograph, a personal conversation, a private moment or a sensitive piece of information can travel across the world in seconds. Messaging platforms have made communication faster, easier and more accessible than ever before.
But somewhere along the way, we overlooked an important question:
Once we share something with someone, do we really have any control over what happens to it next?
We have become accustomed to features such as disappearing messages, view-once photographs and private conversations. These features create a sense of security, but they do not necessarily prevent someone from preserving what they see.
A message may disappear from a conversation, but someone could have already taken a screenshot. A photograph may be available for only a few seconds, but another phone could capture it. A private conversation may be protected within an application, yet its contents can still be reproduced outside that application.
This made us question something fundamental:
What does privacy actually mean if the person sharing the information has so little control over its capture?
The Inspiration
Veil was inspired by a simple observation.
When a messaging platform introduces a feature such as View Once, it attempts to limit how long the recipient can access the content. However, restricting access through software does not necessarily prevent someone from capturing what is displayed on the screen.
We realised that there was an interesting technical problem hidden behind this everyday situation.
What if privacy could extend beyond controlling who receives information and how long they can access it?
What if we could also make unauthorized digital and optical capture significantly more difficult?
That question became the starting point of Veil.
We did not want to build another messaging application with a few additional privacy settings. We wanted to explore a different approach to visual privacy.
What Is Veil?
Veil is a privacy-focused messaging platform being developed around the idea of giving users greater control over their shared visual information.
At its foundation, Veil provides a communication experience with text messaging, image and video sharing, and a custom media-viewing environment.
But its long-term ambition goes further.
We are exploring multiple layers of content protection:
1. Digital Capture Protection
Using platform-supported security mechanisms, Veil aims to prevent sensitive content from appearing in ordinary screenshots and screen recordings wherever the operating system permits.
2. Optical Capture Resistance
This is the central research challenge behind the project.
We want to investigate whether software-based display modulation can exploit differences between human visual perception and camera sensor capture, making photographs taken using another device significantly less useful while keeping the original content reasonably readable to the intended viewer.
3. Adaptive Protection
Different displays and cameras behave differently. We intend to investigate adaptive protection techniques that can adjust rendering parameters to improve capture resistance under different conditions.
4. Intelligent Optimization
In later stages, we plan to explore machine learning as a way to identify protection configurations that balance human readability and resistance to unauthorized capture.
Why the Name Veil?
A veil does not necessarily hide something from everyone. It creates a boundary between what is visible and what is accessible.
That is the philosophy behind our name.
We do not believe privacy should mean disconnecting people or preventing them from sharing meaningful experiences.
Instead, we want to explore how technology can create a better boundary between sharing information and preserving control over it.
Veil represents that boundary.
Our Development Philosophy
We are not approaching this as a single-feature application.
Veil is being developed incrementally, with each stage establishing the foundation for the next.
We began with a conventional messaging application, introduced image and video communication, and developed a custom media viewer.
We are now developing a native Android protection module to investigate operating-system-level capture restrictions on actual devices.
The next challenge is considerably harder: exploring whether a visual signal can remain understandable to a human observer while becoming less useful when photographed by another camera.
We recognise that no software running on an ordinary display can guarantee that another device will never capture its contents. A determined person may still find ways to reproduce or reconstruct information.
Our objective is not to promise impossible security. It is to research, engineer and implement meaningful improvements to visual privacy.
Our Vision
We envision a future where privacy is not limited to passwords, encryption or disappearing messages.
It also considers what happens when information is displayed, viewed and potentially captured.
Veil is an attempt to explore that future.
We want to make sharing easier without making personal information unnecessarily vulnerable.
Because the ability to share something should not mean surrendering every form of control over it.
Veil — Share freely. Stay private.
