Inspiration
As a remote freelancer living in Vietnam, I was constantly dealing with multiple currencies — being paid in USD, spending in VND, and sometimes saving in EUR or JPY. Existing finance apps felt clunky, especially for multi-currency users like expats, students abroad, or families receiving remittances. I wanted to create a tool that makes tracking money effortless and flexible. That’s why I built Vega: AI Money Tracker — a finance app designed for people with global, multi-currency lifestyles.
What it does
Vega makes personal finance simple and intelligent:
- AI-powered input: Add expenses via chat, voice, or by uploading a receipt photo. Vega automatically detects categories, amounts, and currencies.
- Multi-currency tracking: Transactions in different currencies are converted automatically with real-time exchange rates, while preserving the original value.
- Smart notifications: With OneSignal, Vega reminds users when budgets, debts, or savings goals are approaching their limits.
- iOS Widgets: Custom widgets let users view balances, budgets, or quickly log transactions right from their iPhone home screen.
- Insights dashboard: Overview and category insights help users understand their spending habits and manage finances proactively.
How I built it
- Frontend: Built with Flutter, using Riverpod for state management, Moon Design for UI, and GoRouter for navigation.
- Backend: Supabase for authentication, database, and Edge Functions, handling multi-currency logic and AI calls (OpenAI + Gemini).
- AI integration: Chatbot interface for categorization and transaction input, with history sync between local DB (Hive/Sembast) and Supabase.
- Monetization: RevenueCat integration for subscriptions and paywall management.
- Engagement: OneSignal Journeys and REST API for onboarding nudges and financial reminders.
Challenges I ran into
- Handling timezone and currency conversions consistently across accounts and transactions.
- Dealing with App Store review rejections around IAP and paywall clarity.
- Balancing performance with AI integration while keeping the app responsive on iOS devices.
- Debugging in-app purchases and sandbox testers within hackathon deadlines.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
- Built and shipped a fully functional multi-currency AI money tracker from scratch as a solo developer.
- Successfully integrated RevenueCat for subscriptions and OneSignal for personalized user engagement.
- Delivered customizable iOS home screen widgets that bring finance insights and quick actions directly to users.
- Designed a delightful onboarding and UI experience, optimized for both light and dark themes.
- Launched on the Apple App Store within the hackathon timeframe.
What I learned
- How to design a finance app that truly adapts to different user lifestyles and currencies.
- The importance of clear onboarding and nudges (Day-0 Journeys) for user activation.
- How to work with Supabase Edge Functions + OneSignal REST API to deliver event-driven push notifications.
- How to streamline App Store submission by pre-emptively addressing reviewer feedback.
What's next for Vega: AI Money Tracker
- Group Spending Bot for managing shared expenses with friends or roommates.
- More iOS widget types for budgeting, savings progress, and personalized AI insights.
- Siri/Shortcuts integration for faster expense logging.
- Deeper analytics: monthly reports, savings projections, and debt payoff insights.
- Global expansion: Add more languages and localized currency presets for expats and travelers.
