Inspiration
We wanted to create a survival story that captures the anxiety of navigating a world designed to exploit you... where every opportunity could be real or a trap. The sea turtle's journey mirrors the universal experience of trying to establish independence while surrounded by systems that profit from vulnerability.
What it does
Vast Ocean is a branching narrative adventure following a young sea turtle's survival journey through a dangerous techno-organic ocean. After a dramatic beach escape, the turtle must earn "pearls"—the world's currency—to survive.
Chapter 1: Pearls - The turtle's life support is failing. Players navigate countless scam offers disguised as opportunities to find legitimate work and shelter in a sprawling underwater city.
Chapter 2: Friends - With basic survival secured, a new danger emerges: loneliness. Players must distinguish genuine connection from those exploiting that need.
Each choice shapes the turtle's path through this 20-30 minute experience, where survival depends on recognizing authenticity in a predatory world.
How we built it
Using YouTube's interactive video infrastructure, we created cinematic clips connected through decision points. This let us focus on visual storytelling and emotional weight rather than technical complexity, making each choice feel consequential.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing emotional tension with entertainment. We needed scenarios that feel genuinely threatening and consequential while keeping players engaged in the turtle's adventure. The techno-organic ocean setting helped us create distance from reality while maintaining the weight of the turtle's survival stakes.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a narrative that makes players genuinely care about a sea turtle navigating a hostile world. Victories feel earned because failure is always lurking... one wrong choice and the turtle falls prey to scams that end the run. That real threat of loss makes surviving through smart decisions genuinely satisfying.
What we learned
Emotional stakes work best when grounded in universal needs. By focusing on survival, stability, and belonging, we found players engage more authentically than with abstract challenges.
What's next for Vast Ocean
Additional chapters exploring how predatory systems target other fundamental human needs. The turtle's journey continues through increasingly complex situations, always balancing immediate survival with the search for genuine connection in exploitative environments.
