Inspiration
The concept of talking about politics has been lost in greater parts of Sweden. As of today most individuals need to, by themselves, keep track of what the different parties stand for and how their work affect ones life. It is however fairly difficult, if not impossible, to keep track of what politicians are actually doing and saying. This can easily lead to a lot of people simply falling into consensus and voting like the people around them. This needs to be fixed.
It is vital for our society that the people are engaged in politics and that the chosen government truly represents the people’s interest.
What it does
The application uses the API from Sveriges Riksdag to visualize how parties and politicians votes in “Betänkanden”.
How we built it
An intensive brainstorming session first occurred. We then set up a team of backend and frontend developers, where some individuals work on both teams and where we could.
Challenges we ran into
The data provided through the API was poorly structured leading to us having to use a lot of time to restructure it.
We had little knowledge about voting processes in general.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Great teamwork which got us all the way!
- Created a working scalable prototype
- Awesome scraping
- Developed algorithm to analyse possible tags for entries, such as miljö/skatter/bostad/invandring.
What we learned
- Analyse the datasets provided by the API before stating your goal.
- Risk analysis, what can we do with the data provided?
What's next for Vardagsmotion
- Being able to follow specific politicians and get data of what they are doing within their work.
- Being able to provide more data about more votes.
- Crowdsourcing the data.
