Inspiration

VanGo was inspired by Quin’s experience as a solo woman van lifer. Constant travel makes traditional dating and social apps ineffective and often unsafe. We saw that van lifers don’t need more swiping they need trust, shared context, and real-world connections.

This led us to build a gated, trust-first community where people connect through real experiences, not endless profiles.

What it does

VanGo is an invite-only community app for van lifers that combines:

  • Nomadic dating with other van lifers
  • Activity-based friendships through real-world events
  • Trusted peer-to-peer builder help for van builds

Connections are formed through events, not infinite swiping. Messaging unlocks only after shared experiences, prioritizing safety and authenticity.

How we built it

  • iOS app built with SwiftUI using MVVM-C architecture
  • Backend powered by Firebase Cloud Functions (TypeScript) and Firestore
  • Apple & Google Sign-In for secure authentication
  • RevenueCat for subscriptions and monetization
  • Map-based discovery using MapKit
  • Firebase Cloud Messaging for real-time and event-driven notifications

The system uses real-time listeners, event lifecycle states, and backend-triggered matching to ensure a consistent and scalable experience.

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing a dating experience without swiping while keeping it engaging
  • Building trust and safety into the product itself not relying only on moderation
  • Designing a waitlist system that feels protective, not frustrating
  • Balancing manual moderation with invite codes to allow organic growth
  • Monetizing the platform without turning trust into a pay-to-win system
  • Ensuring revenue features support safety and commitment, not visibility or manipulation
  • Keeping the MVP feature-rich while maintaining stability and clarity

Each challenge pushed us to design with intention prioritizing community trust over growth hacks or aggressive monetization.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Moving beyond traditional dating mechanics by enabling connections through real-world events instead of endless swiping
  • Designing a trust-first, invite-only system with moderator review that protects the community without blocking growth
  • Building flexible discovery tools map-based exploration, event cards, filters, and search so users can find what fits their journey
  • Creating a clean, polished UI optimized for outdoor and real-world use
  • Shipping a production-ready MVP in a short timeframe without sacrificing stability or clarity

What we learned

  • Trust and safety work best when they are designed into the product flow, not added later as rules or policies
  • Removing familiar patterns (like swiping) forces clearer thinking and more intentional UX decisions
  • Invite-only systems and moderation can coexist with growth when designed as part of the experience
  • Monetization feels healthier when it supports access, visibility, and safety not attention or exploitation
  • Real-world context (events, check-ins, shared experiences) creates stronger and more meaningful connections than purely digital signals
  • Building fast does not mean building carelessly clear boundaries are what make MVPs work

What's next for VanGo: Trust-Based Van Life Community & Events

  • Expanding event creation with richer details such as routes, multi-stop plans, and longer journeys
  • Deepening event-based stories and galleries to keep the app useful before, during, and after events
  • Growing the builder system with clearer profiles, availability, and trust signals
  • Enriching user profiles with more meaningful van-life and activity context
  • Introducing AI-assisted moderation and fraud detection to support human reviewers at scale
  • Expanding VanGo Pro with role-based monetization and paid access to advanced roles like trusted builders

Our focus remains the same: growing intentionally, protecting the community, and helping nomads connect through real experiences.
