Inspiration

I saw the ad for this Hackathon in a subreddit for React Native that I follow frequently, and when I looked through the cases, I found Quin’s case to be very relevant for me, having recently created some apps with Expo and React Native, and also integrated RevenueCat.

What it does

It's a Van Life community app for nomads who like to travel and meet friends/potential partners. The community can add spots & events for others to discover and take part in. Share their travel journals, create DIY & build blog posts, or ask questions.

How we built it

The frontend (app) is built with React Native (Expo), using Google Stitch for design input, and Claude Opus for generating the code I had planned.

Challenges we ran into

The challenge is not to go overboard with features, or perfect a feature for too long. If it works, then it's good enough (for now) to ship.

Also, finding the time to finish everything. It's a good tip to submit your build a couple of days ahead of the deadline, since the documentation and video also take time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Besides the product (which I'm very proud of), I'm actually very happy with my video, editing all my "staring into the void," "ehm," and stumbling over words into a watchable demo.

What we learned

I have learned to integrate oauth with Google and Apple. (Never done that before). Also that it's kind of crazy to create an app (with backend) that works in under four weeks! I think I will lay down on my couch a couple of days, or go out and touch grass :)

What's next for Vanderlust

  • Finishing up the community part where users create posts and interact with others.
  • Lots of testing in all kinds of scenarios.
  • Ensuring the users are 100% safe and have control over their data.
  • Optimizing for Android (I have started, but mainly developed for iOS). Yay for React Native!
