Inspiration
Van life and digital nomadism are growing fast, but most tools today focus either on travel planning or on dating. There is no simple way for van travelers to meet others based on activities, skills, or shared interests while also creating opportunities to earn money on the road.
VanBuddy was inspired by the idea of combining community, adventure, and sustainability into one mobile experience made specifically for van travelers.
What it does
VanBuddy is a community app for van travelers who want to meet others, explore together, and earn money while traveling.
Users can:
- Discover communities and activity-based connections
- Join or create paid communities around shared interests
- Offer services (repairs, skills, help) to other travelers
- Share trusted spots and locations
- Build a profile that reflects their lifestyle and interests
The app focuses on connection through shared activities instead of superficial swiping.
How we built it
VanBuddy was built as a mobile-first MVP with a strong focus on UI/UX and user flows.
The project includes:
- A structured onboarding flow
- Activity and community-based discovery
- Profile system
- Monetization using RevenueCat for subscriptions and paid content
- A modular component system to allow future scalability
The frontend was developed first to validate the experience before connecting backend services and monetization logic.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was defining the right balance between community, matching, and monetization without turning the app into a dating platform.
Other challenges included:
- Designing trust and verification flows
- Structuring multiple user paths (communities, services, spots)
- Building a flexible UI that supports different content types
- Integrating monetization in a way that feels natural and not forced
Time constraints required focusing on an MVP rather than a full production system.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A working MVP with real user flows
- A clean and scalable design system
- Monetization integrated using RevenueCat
- A unique concept combining travel, community, and earning
- A clear product direction instead of a generic social app
What we learned
We learned how important it is to:
- Define a clear core problem before adding features
- Design flows before writing backend logic
- Keep monetization aligned with user value
- Build modular components for future growth
- Focus on connection and trust instead of pure matching
We also learned how to scope a project realistically within hackathon limits.
What's next for VanBuddy
Next steps include:
- Expanding community and activity matching
- Adding better trust and verification tools
- Improving profile customization
- Introducing events and group trips
- Scaling monetization with creator tools
- Testing with real van travelers
The long-term goal is to make VanBuddy the social and economic platform for people living and traveling on the road.
