Inspiration

The nomadic lifestyle offers unparalleled freedom, but it also brings profound isolation. Finding partners who understand mobile living or getting trusted mechanical help when your electrical setup fails off-grid is a daunting challenge. Inspired by shared values of community and intentional connection ("For God so loved the world..." - John 3:16), we built VanBond to bring safety, companionship, and builder mentorship to nomads on the open road.

What it does

• Dual-Mode Discovery Engine: Toggle between Nomadic Dating 💕 and Activity Friends 🤝 (climbing, skiing, surfing, hiking).
• Route & Van-Type Matching: Discover travelers traveling along your upcoming route or driving similar rigs (Sprinter, ProMaster, Transit).
• Builder Help Marketplace: Connect with verified vehicle conversion experts for hourly troubleshooting, electrical consultations, and build advice.
• AI Van-Build Assistant: Instant technical answers for off-grid solar, 12V wiring, plumbing, and insulation challenges.
• RevenueCat Monetization: Pro ($25/mo) and Premium ($35/mo) tiers for unlimited swipes, route matching, and builder access, plus Booster Credit Packs ($15 for 10 credits, $40 for 25 credits).

How we built it

• Mobile Client: Flutter / Dart featuring swipeable cards, interactive profile creation, image pickers, and live chat polling.
• Billing System: RevenueCat Flutter SDK (purchases_flutter) powering auto-renewing subscriptions and consumable builder credits.
• Backend Services: RESTful cloud API on Microsoft Azure App Services (vanbon-gbgzfqh8gpbpbkfa.eastus-01.azurewebsites.net).
• Verification Pipeline: Selfie verification workflow to ensure genuine community trust.

Challenges we ran into

Building a trust-first social app for mobile travelers. We resolved safety concerns by implementing selfie verification and an invite-only onboarding mechanism to protect solo travelers and van-lifers in remote areas.

What we learned

Niche communities value safety, shared lifestyle values, and practical utility above generic social swiping. Tailoring profiles to van specs and travel corridors creates dramatically higher match quality.
