The current global health crisis forces people into a drastic change of life. This can have severe consequences influencing physical and psychological health. Our goal is to give people a voice by simply asking about influences of the crisis on their lives. With enough data collected, we can raise awareness for issues that people experience, some of which may not be apparent at first glance.
What it does
We have created and deployed a web application with a survey with questions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project consists of a survey platform collecting input from people all over the world in order to learn about the issues they experience during the crisis. The collected data points are furthermore presented via different kinds of data visualisation.
How we built it
We built it using react, theme-ui with firebase datastore.
Challenges we ran into
The most difficult part was the organisation of workforce over variable time-zones, which we managed by working in shifts.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
We are proud to have managed the organisational difficulties a virtual worldwide hackathon brings with it. Our team of 7 people from Europe and Northern-America with very different backgrounds, managed to launch a website by joining forces for the greater good. That's quite something!
What we learned
We learned how to virtually work in a team that is spread across the world.
What's next for Value the Vulnerable
- Integration of more questions, based on review of related research
- More complex format of questions (e. g. showing a question only if previous question was answered with "yes")
- More flexibility in data visualisation for users (i. e. users will be able to play around with the visualisation)
- Incorporating techniques for stronger privacy (e. g. differential privacy) in the visualisation output
