Inspiration
Every student and first-time founder has an idea, but most spend months building before finding out if anyone needs it. We wanted a fast, free way to get a reality check before writing a single line of code.
What it does
ValidateIt takes a startup idea in plain text and instantly generates a structured validation report:
- Target users
- The problem being solved
- Competitors
- Risks
- Revenue ideas
- A 5-step next-action checklist
It also includes example ideas to try, a Free vs Pro pricing section, and a waitlist for early access.
How we built it
- Python for the backend logic
- Streamlit for the web interface
- Gemini API for generating the reports, with a carefully designed prompt that returns fixed sections
- Streamlit Community Cloud for deployment
- API keys are kept in environment variables and secrets, never in the code
Challenges we ran into
- Getting the AI to return consistent, specific sections instead of generic advice
- Tuning the prompt after testing with different types of ideas (apps, food businesses, SaaS tools)
- Deploying securely without exposing the API key
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A working, publicly accessible app built from scratch in a short time
- Reports that are specific and actionable, not generic
- Early waitlist signups from our college community
What we learned
- Prompt design matters as much as code for AI products
- Shipping a simple version fast beats a perfect version late
- How to deploy and manage secrets in a
