Inspiration
Last year when a novel coronavirus began devastating the world, scientists buckled down and began the journey of discovering a new vaccine to fight the virus. Fast forward one year and we have two very promising vaccines being dispersed around the world. However, once you have been vaccinated, how can you provide proof of your vaccination when travelling? That's where VACPASS comes in.
What it does
VACPASS is a secure way for individuals who have been treated with the coronavirus vaccine to provide proof of vaccination. Many countries around the world whose economy is held up by tourism have been economically devastated this past year. They need tourists to return in order to maintain themselves. The World Health Organization has noted that a primary way for these countries to reopen is to assure that visitors have been vaccinated. VACPASS allows medical staff to provide patients who have been vaccinated with a secret pin number, which when entered on the VACPASS app created a QRCode that verifies the individual has been vaccinated. This QRCode can be scanned by foreign countries at airports, bars and malls, and just about anywhere else!
How we built it
The app is currently built as an Android app using Android Studio, with an SQLite database.
Challenges we ran into
Challenges that we ran into include creating a secure place to store the information. For now, it is on an SQLite database, which is quite secure. Another problem that we ran into which we were unfortunately unable to solve was storing an individual QRCode for each user.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the user interface we've created on the android application. We are also proud of addressing a pressing real-life problem with an innovative digital solution. We are proud that the app is currently working, and connected to a secure SQL database that stores all user information.
What we learned
We learned a great deal about databases and communicating with the database through an Android application.
What's next for VACPASS
To further secure and protect the information VACPASS stores, we plan to build it on the blockchain in the future. This would allow it to be more secure, and up to date for every user. We would also like the application to be available for bot iOS and Android.
