As COVID vaccinations are quickly being released to the general public in record time to the combat this global pandemic, many people are anxious off the reliability and safety of these vaccines and the possible side effects. One candidate said he feared the vaccine more than COVID itself. The reality is that many are fearing the vaccine, some think it was created too quickly, while others don’t think COVID is enough of a risk to get the vaccine. Thus, we concluded that it is important to educate the public about what people who are currently getting vaccinated are experiencing in order to allow for our users to make educated decisions. As the vaccine is still fairly new (only 3.2% of the US got vaccinated as of January 15, 2021), there were not many resources regarding vaccine symptom data, so we believe our application is a perfect resource for the current global pandemic.
What it does
Thus, to ease this situation and educate the general public, we have built a web app in which users can get realtime data and information regarding the symptoms of previously vaccinated people, as well as use our Keras predicting model to predict any possible symptoms they could discover in themselves if they were to take the vaccine. Our website centralizes this vaccine symptom data, while our easy-to-navigate UI and seamless graphs and designs make it easy for people to quickly get statistics and visualize necessary data.
How we built it
We used Python and streamlit.io to develop the website, and used Firebase for our realtime database. We also developed a deep learning neural network model using Keras in order to use the collected data to statistically predict any symptoms our users may experience depending on their information such as their race, age and ethnicity. Prior to our project, we sent out a google form to all of our social medias and friends to ask anyone who has had the vaccine to fill it out so that we can use their data to build our predicting model.
Challenges we ran into
It was our first time using firebase, streamlit.io, and building and deploying compressed ML models so we had a bit of learning to do but it definitely paid off
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to design, create and deploy a fully functioning app that provides valuable information that everyone is looking for in these tough times.
What we learned
We learned about web development, databases and machine learning
What's next for VacciNATION
We plan on expanding this app to include a forum style tab in which people can discuss symptoms or provide more in-depth information on their experiences regarding their vaccination. We also want to publicize our site and would try to create a better prediction algorithm by gathering more data.
