Inspiration
HowdyHack 2020: Spy. Inspired by this year’s socially-distant, virtual hackathon and the debonair hackathon theme, we wanted to create a memorable product that users would enjoy. The game is developed around a classic spy story — a special agent trying to secure a vaccine within a suitcase that is being hidden from the public... Before it is too late.
What is it
Vaccination Destination is a 2D, single-player game that challenges users to think strategically through a series of levels — each progressively getting more difficult.
How we built it
Our video game was developed on the Unity platform, leveraging C# to create the character’s skillset and overall gameplay. We first began building the 2D structure and overall interface of the game, creating a custom tileset using Photoshop and implementing it using Unity’s tile palette feature. The character was brought to life through the creation of various different methods in C#, representing each skill that is available for the user. After prototyping multiple designs, we created several levels with different obstacles, binding them together through the process of scripting within Unity.
Challenges I ran into
As a developer team, we wanted to ensure that the game was effortless and enjoyable, focusing on the user and their gameplay experience. With this in mind, we often encountered ourselves going back and forth on the overall design and difficulty of each level, challenging ourselves to switch from developer mode to a more user-centered mindset with each prototype.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
As beginner hackers, we are extremely proud of the progress we made in 24 hours, creating a project from scratch that we think is truly memorable for our first ever hackathon. Beyond simply seeing our game through to fruition, we are proud to design a product with smooth, interactive gameplay that is exciting for users.
What we learned
In making our game, we learned how to use C# and apply it to video game design in Unity. Prior to this hackathon, we had next to no experience developing video games from scratch, which led us to learning completely new skills during the development process.
What's next for Vaccination Destination
Hoping to elevate the game outside the constraints of a 24-hour timeframe, our next step would be to implement more animations and develop higher, more difficult levels, in order to keep the game interesting and exciting.
