Inspiration We heard about a Request for Proposal (RFP) calling for a utility tracking solution for municipalitiesand we jumped in. The challenge aligned perfectly with our passion for building smart, civic tech tools. Using Bolt.new, we rapidly prototyped a scalable and elegant platform tailored to city needs. What started as a response to an RFP quickly became a powerful vision for how local governments can better manage energy, save money, and hit their sustainability goals.

What It Does Utility Tracker is a comprehensive energy management platform built specifically for municipal governments. It provides a centralized hub to monitor, analyze, and optimize utility consumption across all city facilities. Key features include: Dashboard & Analytics: Real-time energy data, interactive visualizations, KPIs, and predictive insights Facility & Account Management: Track buildings, utility accounts, vendors, and department-level budgets Bill Processing: Upload bills in any format (PDF, Excel, CSV) with automated data extraction and validation Custom Reporting: Generate reports by facility, department, or vendor, export in multiple formats, schedule automated reports ENERGY STAR Integration: Benchmarking, scoring, and compliance reporting with EPA Portfolio Manager Energy Project Tracking: Manage retrofit projects, track ROI, and analyze pre/post-performance Sustainability Tracking: Monitor carbon footprint (Scope 1, 2, 3), renewable energy usage, and compliance with GRI, CDP User Management: Role-based access, department-level permissions, audit logs, MFA support Customization: White-label branding, flexible vendor/rate input, and municipality-specific configuration Alerts & Notifications: Overspend warnings, usage anomalies, bill reminders, and more

How We Built It Bolt Frontend: Bolt React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS for a clean, responsive UI the following based on prompting Authentication: JWT-based role and permission management File Handling: Multi-format utility bill parsing engine (PDF, CSV, Excel) API Integrations: ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager for benchmarking Deployment: Optimized using Bolt.new for rapid iteration and scalability

Challenges We Ran Into Parsing utility bills with inconsistent formatting from various vendors Mapping complex utility rate structures across different meter types Balancing customizability with ease of use for different city departments

Accomplishments That We’re Proud Of Integrated real-time dashboards across all municipal buildings from write good prompt Enabled department-based views and permission controls Delivered a white-labeled, configurable solution ready for any city

What We Learned Cities need simple, intuitive tools to deal with complex infrastructure Rapid prototyping with the right platform (like Bolt.new) is a game-changer

What’s Next for the Utility Tracker Platform AI Forecasting: Predict seasonal trends and future utility costs Mobile App: On-the-go access for building staff and inspectors Public Dashboard: Show citizens city progress on sustainability goals GIS and Sensor Integrations: Deeper real-time facility tracking
