Inspiration
For Utility (Electricity, Gas and Water) companies, building different rate scenarios is a very critical business function. While the impact of rate design is on profitability is obvious in competitive markets, even in regulatory markets, it is equally important. In regulated markets, utilities need approval form regulators for the rate increases to compensate their investments. Most of the utilities worldwide still use spreadsheet based solutions to support their rate design requirements. The pricing team need to run multiple scenarios using complex formulas. This typically require fast turn around and conventional development process cannot match the speed. Here I am exploring QuickBase low code solution to build a Utility Billing Simulator
What it does
Role : Pricing Team Can enter new rates to the system Can enter account/consumption details in the system Can apply any of the available rates to the account/consumption and generate a bill
Role : Customer Care Team Can enter account/consumption details in the system Can apply any of the available rates to the account/consumption and generate a bill
Role : Senior Leadership Team Can see the changes made to the rates Can see the average bill for the rates in question. Can see the percentage of progress made to bill evaluation
What's next for Utility billing Simulationusing QuickBase
Simulation of billing using the proposed rate can help to see how average customers will be impacted by the new rates. It also helps to see how a proposed rates will generate revenue to meet the investment decisions. In regular software billing projects ( rate cases, bill redesign, rate redesign etc.) billing simulator can be used for QA to validate if the billing system is applying the rate correctly. In competitive markets, Simulation of billing using different rates can help the customer to choose the most suitable rates. In case of day to day utility contact center operations, billing simulator can help customer care representatives to address high bill enquiries
