Inspiration
As second semester freshman, who underwent the UTD onboarding process not long ago, we know the stress and anticipation that you feel when you see the massive list of tasks you need to check off before you officially became a UTD student. This sense of being overwhelmed is heightened due to the lack of a designated place for all these tasks to be listed, as instead, students receive multiple emails that get lost in their inbox. Moreover, when a student misses a deadline, or feels confused as to where to start the process, they're more likely to get discouraged by college before their first semester even starts. To help decrease the stress and clearly outline the tasks that need to be done prior to starting your first semester at UTD, we created this website that gives you an ordered to-do list to make the processes much smoother and take some of the stress off of the student's shoulders.
What it does
UTD Navigator allows students to have a user friendly experience when onboarding into the UTD system, while also being introduced to important information that freshmen should know. Our website provides a step-by-step process in successfully completing onboarding.
How we built it
We used React and tailwind.css to build our app.
Challenges we ran into
We struggled with consolidating the code every person contributed and navigating git. We also were overwhelmed with so many ideas and had to find a way to incorporate all our ideas with quality.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I believe that we worked efficiently as a team and properly divided our roles, while also supporting and helping each other along the way. Additionally, we spent a majority of our time planning our figma design, resulting in us feeling proud of our creation at the end.
What we learned
Through this process, we learned how to create a proper UI/UX design through self learning and a workshop hosted by CBRE. Moreover, like mentioned, we learned and effectively accomplished working well as a team.
What's next for UTD Navigator
In the future, we plan to implement a news feature that highlights recent advances in engineering to keep students up to date and a series of videos that guide the students through the process of using tools helpful for UTD students such as UTDGrades, RateMyProfessor, and SchedulePlanner. We also hope to create a internship prep page that contains Leetcode problems, a chatbot to practice networking with, and a detailed description of how to use LinkedIn. Lastly, to improve the design features, we would like to allow the user to select a theme or create a set of characters.
