Inspiration

Historically, women's sports have faced unequal pay gap compared their respective men's team. The national women's soccer team in particular has been vocal about it in recent years following their past two World Cup wins, where despite achieving more success than the men's team on the international stage, they still did not gain equal pay. On average, a women's soccer league player earns 25% of what the male players do based on minimum salary and max earnings for a World Cup win.

What it does

The aim of the app is to promote U.S. women’s soccer fan engagement and to build stronger bonds in the community between both fans and players. It allows fans and players to engage and communicate through posts and comments as well as players being able to stream live videos for fans to watch. The app also helps fans stay updated on team news and supports the team through the merch store.

How we built it

We used Figma to create mockups of the app's UI design. The app is not implemented through any code of functionality at this point.

Challenges we ran into

We unfortunately did not have enough time to actually code the app but decided to try out hand at creating the mockups through UI design. It was our first time using Figma so we had to learn how to use the program while building in it. Since our app design included so many features, we debated over how to organize the elements in a way that is accessible and easy to use for users. It was challenging to make all of the elements cohesive through the layout and color choices in a way that makes the app look “natural” for users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our design focused heavily on accessibility and we were able to incorporate many features into the design that promote accessibility for all users. The app we created is both to promote engagement between players and fans and to allow fans to support their favorite team through the merchandise store.

What we learned

We learned how to design an application through mobile first design and how to create a prototype in Figma. We were also able to learn more about the Women’s soccer team in order to create an app that suits their needs. Finally, we learned how to create accessible features and layouts within mobile development.

What's next for USWNT Engage

Coding the app with actual functionality! But we'll need to work on our app development skills first.
