UStreak

Inspiration

It's hard to keep going to class when it's so boring every day. As post-secondary students know, going to that 8am is a struggle and there isn't much joy felt from it. So, we've decided to gamify going to class!

What it does

Our app inputs your calendar, and sets you up for an easy yes or no question. Only, there's a reward for going to class. Just like beloved gacha games, we've implemented a way to earn and collect only from going to class. The user swipes left if they have gone, and right if they haven't. This system gives the user points only for going and earn a chance to get a character, and even rank among others. It's an easy and low friction way to build good habits and keep you motivated.

How we built it

We first prototyped and designed in Figma. Our colour palate had a nice comforting, feel for users and we made frameworks and icons for each screen. As rough designs and thoughtfully layed out flows, we input it into Figma Make using the Student version, and reimagined our ideas to life better than before.

Challenges we ran into

We had several issues trying to come up with a design or idea initially, as most are uncreative or outright cliche. Once we started we noticed we had no idea how Figma worked, so we brought it upon ourselves to learn basic tools and design before using Figma Make. Figma Make is tricky, as it does exactly as needed, or it changes a component completely different from the original idea, and it was hard to undo the changes it made. We ended up with multiple backup runs of Figma Make but ultimately made an app we are proud of.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we built a complete app from Figma that works and uses polished animations with features that are nice to use.

What we learned

We learned a lot about Figma, both about its tools and how its logic can create something of a simple idea into an interactive product so quickly. We learned a lot about UX and how thoughtful design is, starting from even one button.
