Inspiration
Entering UMass, I noticed how many upcoming students felt troubled about one major issue. That was finding friends and connecting on campus. With USocial we aim to appease this trouble which many upcoming students face and provide a central platform for this issue.
What it does
USocial is a platform which allows for easy connection of different people throughout the campus. Within the website you can post events such as parties or study sessions. There is also a request section where you can request for rides, notes, a shopping run, and more.
How we built it
We built it as a website using html:5 for all the front end work. In order to handle the server skeleton structure of the project, we used python with flask. We also used firebase for our database to store all user information.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into many challenges along the way. One of them was the problem with making it accessible to mobile users. Also, ensuring compatibility between the front-end and back-end required us to troubleshoot many bugs and issues.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Overall, we're proud we successfully launched a functional prototype that does what we wanted it to do. That we were able to make a fully working website that worked from the back to front. We're also proud of the user-friendly interface that we have created.
What we learned
We gained a better understanding of HTML5, CSS, Python, and Flask, along with a better understanding of the best practices in. We also learned the importance of effective communication and task delegation in a collaborative setting.
What's next for USocial
Next we hope to scale the website to include people from throughout the campus. We also hope to make the website more accessible for mobile users, this includes a mobile app. We also hope to add more features to make it even easier for users to connect throughout campus.
