Inspiration

Students are always having issues finding parking across the USF campus, especially parking that corresponds to your parking permit type. So we decided to solve this issue by making a tool to help students, faculty and visitors find their way across campus and park efficiently.

What it does

The website requests two things from the user, the building they're heading to and their parking permit type. Afterwards, it calculates the closest parking lot to this building that the user can park in with their permit type, shows it on the embedded map and gives the distance between the selected building and parking lot.

How we built it

The website runs on HTML/CSS for the front end, and pure JavaScript for the back end. The Google Maps API for JavaScript was used for everything associated with the embedded map.

Challenges we ran into

Data collection was a lot of work, as it couldn't be automated and there were different sources to take from. Building the website naturally gave some trouble, especially when trying to work with multiple pages.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Having made an automatically updating map that showcases the waypoints and gives a clear trajectory from building to parking lot.

What we learned

Learned to work with the Google Maps API, develop a custom map, markers, etc. It's a very versatile tool that will surely be useful for the future. As well as continuing to develop our Web Development skills.

What's next for USF Parking Finder

The app will be pitched to the university to be integrated into USF systems so more students can take advantage of it, and to take advantage of USF's more robust database of the campus locations and parking lots. If USF were to add per spot detection, this could be integrated as well to ignore parking lots if they're full.
