Inspiration
We were inspired by some of the other safety apps such as Citizen, which alerts users when a crime occurs near them. We wanted to take some inspiration from this app and take it to the next level by guiding users through safer areas.
What it does
Using the blue light map that surrounds University of Delaware's campus, the user can see the path with the most lights and thus can decide which route they should go down to get to their destination.
How we built it
This was made using React.js, Javascript, and the Google Maps API integration.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge we ran into was first integrating the API into React. We had to tweak our API keys to make sure we were actually able to access the API, and some of the documentation for the API itself was hard to work with.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I think the two things we are most proud of was setting up the actual website and being able to integrate the Maps API. Many of us did not have a lot of experience working with APIs so it was a struggle at first, but we were able to make it work.
What we learned
We learned a lot about using APIs and developing a website.
What's next for USafe
Next, we hope to integrate real crime statistics into the map API, so that users can more clearly see what areas to avoid.
