Inspiration

Our inspiration came from trying to bring together many communities and cultures in an environment of peaceful understanding. Art museums, YouTube video libraries, and the LDS website.

What it does

Our website aims to create a place for people of all different religions and cultures to share art and experiences with each other. Rather than create our own content, our site hosts images and videos from all around the world that are contributed by people who are passionate about their life and culture.

How we built it

To develop a functional site efficiently, we choose to use Wix. We also gathered copyright-free images from various artists that show a hint of different religions, countries, and cultures from around the world. Both these factors enabled us to readily access the features we needed to pilot the website.

Challenges we ran into

On our journey to create a website to inspire mutual understanding, we ran into several roadblocks. The first was that our team did not have the HTML skills necessary to implement the original web frames that we had drafted. Recognizing that we lacked the capability to accomplish our goals through HTML, we decided to look elsewhere to develop our website. We ultimately chose to use Wix, which led to the next problem, learning how to use Wix. Thankfully we were all able to pick it up quickly and get on to creating our project. However, we quickly ran into a major problem. Wix only allows one contributor to edit the website at a time. This greatly increased the pressure of time and forced us to think of creative solutions for how to create content without being in the editor. And while using Wix restricted some of our creative liberty. Ultimately, we were able to overcome the challenge and transition our original pages to fit the new medium.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that the website successfully displays a variety of human experiences in a neat and functional way. It was rough that only one person could edit the page, but that led to greater accomplishment when we were finally able to finish the page and see all our work come together.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we were always learning. Some members of our team met each other when the hackathon started. This led to a steep learning curve as we sought to learn everyone's abilities and how we could work together. As we all worked together, we were able to share information about the features of Wix and make decisions as a team. Since only one person could edit at a time, we had to delegate tasks and learn to trust that each member would fulfill their assignments on time.

What's next for Us

While the website is a great template, it doesn't have any users or content. The next step would be to find people who would be interested in contributing to our vision with images of their own. As viewership increases, it is likely that we would either have to pay for an upgraded library on Wix or that we'd have to migrate to our own HTML server. From there, the website can grow and we could implement many of the ideas that were not able to be transferred onto Wix, such as analytical data on trending images and categorized images.
