Inspiration
A single click can lead to stolen passwords, financial loss, or compromised personal information. Phishing links are becoming increasingly deceptive, making it difficult for ordinary internet users to distinguish genuine websites from malicious ones. We created URLScourt with a simple mission: make the internet safer by helping people understand the risks behind every suspicious link.
What it does
URLScourt is an AI-powered URL security project that analyzes suspicious links to identify potential phishing attempts, deceptive domains, suspicious keywords, and possible brand impersonation. It generates a risk score, highlights warning signs, and provides understandable explanations to help users make informed decisions before clicking. Our goal is to make cybersecurity accessible, transparent, and useful to everyone.
How we built it
We began by developing a Python-based URL analysis engine that examines URL structure, HTTPS usage, IP addresses, suspicious keywords, URL shorteners, unusual subdomains, and potential brand impersonation. These indicators contribute to a risk score and explainable security warnings. Our planned enhancements include AI-powered threat explanations, trusted URL reputation services, and a user-friendly interface for real-time analysis.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was distinguishing genuinely malicious URLs from legitimate links that simply look unusual. A URL can contain suspicious patterns without being harmful, and a sophisticated phishing link may appear completely normal. We focused on making our analysis explainable while recognizing the importance of reducing false positives, improving detection accuracy, and validating results with reliable security intelligence.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have transformed a real-world cybersecurity problem into a practical project with an explainable URL analysis engine. URLScourt goes beyond a simple warning by showing users the signals that influenced a URL's risk score. We are building toward a tool that empowers people to recognize online threats rather than blindly trusting or fearing every link.
What we learned
Through URLScourt, we learned that effective cybersecurity requires more than identifying threats. It requires clear explanations, careful evaluation, and responsible handling of uncertainty. We also learned how URL analysis, security rules, and AI can work together to support safer digital decisions. Most importantly, we learned to design technology around the people it is meant to protect.
What's next for URLScourt
Our next steps are to integrate reliable threat-intelligence APIs, strengthen detection with machine-learning and AI capabilities, add QR-code scanning, and develop an intuitive web interface. We also aim to evaluate our system against legitimate and malicious URL datasets to measure accuracy and reduce false positives. Our long-term vision is to help people worldwide navigate the internet with greater confidence—because everyone deserves a safer digital world.
