🌟 Inspiration
Urban areas are growing rapidly, but underground infrastructure like drainage pipelines, sewers, and old pipelines are ignored until they fail. We often see road collapses, flooding, sewage overflow, and sudden accidents, and the reason is simple: ➡️ There is no real-time monitoring system for underground infrastructure.
Most current systems are:
Manual
Expensive
Reactive (action is taken after failure)
So we asked a simple question: “Why can’t we predict failures before they happen, using low-cost sensors and AI?”
That question led to UrbanPulse.
🛠️ What it Does
UrbanPulse is an AI-powered infrastructure health monitoring system.
It:
Continuously monitors underground drainage & pipelines
Uses low-cost sensors to collect real-time data
Applies AI analysis to detect early warning signs
Predicts collapse or failure risk before it happens
Displays everything on a smart dashboard
Key Outcomes:
Detects abnormal pressure, vibration, and sound
Estimates risk level (Low / Medium / High)
Predicts possible failure window (e.g. “High risk in 3 days”)
Helps authorities take preventive action instead of emergency response
⚙️ How We Built It 1️⃣ Hardware Layer
We used low-cost, easily available components:
ESP32 (for data collection & WiFi)
Pressure sensor (to detect blockages)
Vibration sensor (to detect structural weakness)
Sound sensor (to detect cracks or leaks)
These sensors are placed:
Inside or near drainage pipelines
At joints and high-risk locations
2️⃣ Data & Cloud Layer
Sensor data is sent in real-time to the cloud
Stored in Firebase
Cleaned and structured for AI analysis
3️⃣ AI & Analytics Layer
AI models analyze patterns like:
Sudden pressure rise
Continuous vibrations
Abnormal sound frequencies
Based on historical + live data, the system:
Detects anomalies
Predicts failure probability
Generates alerts
4️⃣ Dashboard Layer
The dashboard shows:
Live sensor readings
Risk heatmap of the city
Alerts & notifications
Historical trends
Maintenance recommendations
🚧 Challenges We Ran Into
Underground data is noisy → sound & vibration readings are not always clean
Limited real-world datasets for drainage failures
Balancing low cost vs accuracy
Making AI predictions understandable for non-technical authorities
Designing a system that is scalable for an entire city
