Urban Refuge Services Map

The Urban Refuge Services Map was developed to help refugee residents and visitors easily access essential services in their community.

What It Does

This responsive web application allows users to discover services based on their location. And allowing service providers to login and modify their services.

How It Was Built

Built with React for the frontend and Python Flask for the backend, the main branch runs locally while the dockerized version is in the gh-pages branch. The application uses MySQL for data management and an IP-based geolocation library to determine users’ locations.

Challenges Encountered

Deploying the application proved challenging. Setting up frontend and backend communication took considerable time to debug.

Lessons Learned

Key lessons included the importance of thorough testing during deployment and gaining insights into managing geolocation and MySQL databases in web applications.

What’s Next for Urban Refuge Services Map

Future plans include adding more data points and further implementing functionalities to facilitate service providers in updating service information.
