Inspiration

Cities are growing at an unprecedented rate, but alongside this development comes a host of health challenges. Every day, people face issues such as poor air quality, homelessness, substance addiction, and lack of nutritious food, yet these problems often go unnoticed until they reach a critical point. Inspired by these realities, we created this project to illustrate the consequences of ignoring these issues and to highlight the need for immediate action. Much like how October 31st marks the last day of the month with Halloween’s eerie symbolism, we want to remind viewers that ignoring these growing urban health issues could lead to a grim future. The metaphor invites us to act before these crises turn every day into a haunting reminder of what could have been prevented.

What it does

Our project uses a visual narrative to raise awareness about four major urban health challenges:

Air Pollution: Demonstrates how smog and emissions threaten the health of urban dwellers, leading to chronic respiratory conditions. The visuals show hazy skies over a congested city, emphasizing the dire need for cleaner air and environmental policies.
Housing and Homelessness: Explores the impact of rising rents, inadequate shelter, and homelessness. The video shows both struggling individuals and abandoned urban spaces, urging viewers to reflect on how unstable housing impacts health and well-being.
Substance Abuse: Raises awareness about the impact of addiction, both on individuals and society, depicting scenes of isolation and despair. It emphasizes the importance of community-based solutions, mental health support, and rehabilitation services.
Food Security: Explores the stark contrasts between food deserts and areas with access to healthy options. It illustrates how poor access to nutritious food leads to dietary-related diseases, highlighting the urgent need for equitable food distribution and local food initiatives.
The final message is one of hope: Urban health begins with us. By protecting the environment, taking care of ourselves, and supporting those in need, we can prevent a future where every day becomes a grim reminder of what we failed to do.

How we built it

We used a combination of AI tools and creative platforms to create a cohesive and impactful video:

Runway ML: To generate dynamic animations that represent various urban health challenges with cinematic visuals. It allowed us to bring abstract concepts—like the spread of air pollution and substance abuse—into visually engaging scenes.
Luma AI: For crafting realistic 3D representations of urban environments, capturing the depth of these issues with immersive detail. This added a sense of realism to the visuals, making them relatable and thought-provoking.
Canva: For video editing, text overlays, sound effects, and transitions. Canva helped us refine the final product by adding clarity, emotional appeal, and smooth flow between scenes.
ChatGPT: To script the narrative, generate ideas, and polish prompts, ensuring that the content was engaging and fact-driven. ChatGPT also helped us research urban health data to include relevant statistics.

• Editor(Ryan): Assembled the video using Canva, managing transitions, text overlays, and music selection to enhance engagement.
• Script Writer and Prompter(Bryce): Developed the narrative and ensured the text on screen aligned with the visuals, using ChatGPT to craft impactful messages and informative statistics.
• Research Lead(Bryce): Compiled relevant data on urban health issues, such as air pollution statistics and homelessness rates, to ground the video in real-world insights. Together, we coordinated efforts through collaborative feedback loops, revising sections to improve clarity, emotional impact, and factual accuracy.

Challenges we ran into

Visual and Conceptual Alignment: Combining AI-generated visuals with real-world issues required us to strike a balance between artistic expression and factual accuracy.
Time Management: Managing multiple tools, including AI platforms and editing software, required careful planning to meet our deadlines without compromising quality.
Handling Sensitive Topics: Addressing homelessness, addiction, and food insecurity required thoughtful curation. We needed to depict these issues with empathy, avoiding stereotypes or offensive representations.
Tool Integration: Each tool had its own strengths, but integrating their outputs into a seamless video was challenging. We had to experiment with different formats and transitions to ensure visual coherence.

Workshops and Educational Outreach: We envision creating workshops and outreach programs, where our videos can be used to engage students and communities in discussions about urban health solutions.

Ethical Considerations In developing this project, we were mindful of ethical concerns:
• Bias: We ensured the visual depictions did not stereotype or stigmatize marginalized communities. For example, homelessness was shown with empathy, highlighting structural issues rather than personal failure.
• Privacy: Since no real individuals were depicted or filmed, privacy concerns were minimized. All generated content was responsibly sourced.
• Equity: The video draws attention to how urban health issues disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, including low-income communities. This focus underscores the need for equitable solutions to address these systemic challenges.
