Inspiration

The Urban Green Spaces & Farming Initiative (UGSFI) was inspired by the urgent need for more green spaces, access to fresh produce, and a healthier environment in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). In a city filled with high-rises, concrete, and limited access to nature, we wanted to develop a solution that would make green spaces and fresh food accessible to all residents. The successes of urban greening projects in cities like New York and Vancouver showed us the transformative power of these initiatives in improving both quality of life and environmental health, inspiring us to design a solution tailored for the GTA.

What it does

UGSFI aims to transform rooftops, vacant lots, and community spaces across the GTA into vibrant green spaces and urban farms. The initiative incentivizes property owners to create rooftop and community gardens, repurpose unused land, and participate in educational programs on sustainable living. UGSFI not only helps mitigate the effects of urbanization—such as air pollution and urban heat islands—but also addresses food insecurity by increasing access to fresh produce in underserved neighborhoods. This holistic approach improves environmental quality, promotes public health, and strengthens community ties.

How we built it

Research & Benchmarking:I began by studying successful urban farming and greening programs in other cities, analyzing what made them effective and sustainable. Strategic Planning: i identified suitable spaces like rooftops and vacant lots for green space expansion and urban farming in the GTA. Incentive Development: To encourage participation, i crafted a system of tax incentives for property owners who develop green spaces and grants for community organizations starting urban farms. Community Engagement & Education: Recognizing that community involvement is crucial, i designed educational workshops and outreach programs to teach residents sustainable practices and foster local pride. Implementation Timeline: I organized the initiative into phases, starting with pilot neighborhoods to gather feedback and measure success before expanding city-wide.

Challenges we ran into

Community Buy-In: Securing active community engagement and support was essential for the initiative’s success. To address this, we focused on creating accessible educational programs and benefits that would motivate long-term involvement. Environmental & Infrastructure Constraints: Finding suitable locations for green spaces and urban farms in densely built urban areas was challenging. This required collaboration with municipalities to ensure safe and sustainable use of available spaces.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

i am proud to have developed a proposal that not only addresses critical urban issues but also encourages residents, property owners, and local organizations to come together for a greener, healthier city. i am also thrilled with our incentive model, which strikes a balance between practicality and impact. By emphasizing community education and engagement, i believe i’ve created a blueprint for sustainable urban development that could inspire similar initiatives across Canada.

What we learned

Throughout this project, i learned that transforming urban environments requires more than just physical changes it demands community involvement, accessible education, and policies that make sustainable choices easy and attractive. i gained insights into urban planning, policy design, and the unique needs of different neighborhoods. This experience showed me how green spaces and urban farming can have far-reaching benefits beyond environmental health, impacting mental well-being, food security, and social connection.

What's next for Urban Green Spaces & Farming Initiative (UGSFI)

Looking ahead, i aim to pilot UGSFI in select neighborhoods within the GTA to gather community feedback, refine the incentive model, and measure its environmental and social impact. By partnering with local schools, organizations, and municipalities, i hope to establish UGSFI as a permanent, city-wide program. Our vision is for UGSFI to become a model for urban sustainability that other cities can adopt, creating a legacy of green, resilient, and healthy urban communities.
