Inspiration: We got the idea for Uprise from our own experiences with sensory overload in crowded spaces in Downtown, Toronto. Sometimes, even being in a busy café, transit station, or classroom can feel overwhelming, and it’s hard to predict how my senses will react. I realized that many people might face the same challenge and wished there was a way to understand and manage the intensity of their surroundings before stepping into them.
What it does Uprise helps users anticipate sensory overload by tracking environmental signals like noise, crowd density, lighting, and physiological cues. The app provides early alerts, suggests calmer alternatives, and offers coping tools like breathing exercises. It lets users make informed choices, navigate spaces with confidence, and gradually build tolerance to overstimulating environments.
How we built it Made in Figma Make, a new experience for both of us!
Challenges we ran into As a designer sometimes Figma Make became too overwhelming as we were not able to manually go in and edit the design choices. Sometimes it felt like our credits were being wasted to fix one component however it all worked out in the end. Another major issue we had was that since we are only two people we had a lot of workload to do.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We are very proud of how this app came out as this was our first time seeing first hand how our design could turn into instant product material for users.
What's next for Uprise In the future, Uprise could integrate with wearables or environmental sensors to provide more accurate real-time sensory insights about noise, crowds, and other signals. Users could also contribute feedback about how spaces feel, helping build a shared sensory map that highlights calm or overwhelming environments. Over time, these insights could help designers and businesses create more sensory-inclusive spaces that better support people’s comfort and well-being.
