Inspiration
Although we have made significant progress, mental health is still stigmatized in everyday conversation. We created a website that encourages open conversations about both positive and negative emotions, as well as cultivates a positive community.
What it does
The website offers two main features. The first feature allows users to reflect on their mood, stress level, energy level, and fogginess. Users are also able to submit a diary-like entry that would be available for other users to view. The second feature presents users with recent tips and suggestions about self-care strategies from other community members. It also offers a space for users to submit and share their own advice.
How we built it
We built Uplift with HTML, CSS, SCSS, and JavaScript. We used GitHub to collaboratively fork, push, and pull each other's edits, GitHub pages to host an interactive version of our project, and Adobe XD to mock-up our web design and logo.
Challenges we ran into
We have not previously worked together, so our first challenge was figuring out how to share code and build together. Our time difference also added a layer of complexity, but it ultimately meant we could work on the project around the clock. Combined, we also have minimal experience in website creation and we were navigating our first shared hackathon experience together. We both loved the challenges overall!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are really proud of how the website turned out. We are grateful that despite the distance and lack of hackathon experiences, we were able to complete our project together :D.
What we learned
We learned about how to coordinate between multiple people to complete a coding project. In order to do this, we learned more about different coding environments and code hosting platforms such as Visual Studio Code, GitHub, and GitHub Desktop. We also discovered the magic of StackOverflow.
What's next for Uplift
The next steps for development include generating a reliable back end for Uplift, so the user and community data can be saved and the social functions work offline. We would also create social media channels to help spread the word about this mental help tool and welcome more into our community.
