Inspiration

Uplift was inspired by the struggles faced by first-generation low-income students, including the lack of financial guidance, academic support, and mental health resources. Recognizing that many of these students lack mentors or parental support, we aimed to create a comprehensive platform that empowers them to succeed in college and beyond.

What it does

Uplift provides essential resources and support for first-generation low-income students. It offers budgeting tools, college life tips, career guidance, and mental health support. The platform serves as a mentor, guiding students through the complexities of higher education and helping them build a successful future.

How we built it

We used a a website called Wix.com to create the website itself. We used it because we have tons of skills in design and conceptualising ideas, but not enough coding experience to make anything as beautiful as what we came up with for this competition.

Challenges we ran into

Figuirng out all the information to go into the resources was a challenge. Alot of research went into the resources on the website because we wanted it to be accurate, and super super easy for students to understand. Honestly we're tired of old people using big words to discourage us from learning about essential life skills. So that was a bit tricky.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Firstly the fact that we even finished haha. Also the design of the website is amazing like wow. Also we're happy that it's actually useful.

What we learned

We learned alot about time management. And also the alarming lack of usable resources for teenagers out there. Especially free ones. Logically if someone can't afford to pay someone in person to tell them this information, then how would they be able to pay for it online you know? Yeah we learnt we are strong advocates for free resources. And we don't mean free for now then pay for the useful stuff later. We mean FREE.

What's next for Uplift

We want to add way more resources to the website like more financial advice, career advice, college advice, and also hire professianals to talk to the students. It's supposed to have 24/7 support. Also, have a chat forum where students can give advice to each other and discuss their problems. Being young can feel very lonely but there are so many people facing the same problems.
