Inspiration

The growing reality of our only home is grim: the future seems bleak, a desolate world of landfills and trash. We have to protect our Eden, because it is the only home we know exists. We have to inform the youth of today of the gravitas of the situation, and raise awareness of the slow death our Earth is suffering.

What it does

Our project is an amalgam of social media and DIY repurposing crafts, essentially a mix of Pinterest, Tumblr, and Craigslist. It enables users to create accounts, post their repurposing ideas, meet up with other users in a trade market, and customize their profile.

How we built it

We used Android Studio to create an app.

Challenges we ran into

Because this was our first time using Android Studio, we ran into many challenges and obstacles. We had to learn most everything from scratch, and many times the code was half-complete but for some reason didn't run.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Starting from scratch with Android Studio and creating an app that has many complex functions is an achievement in its own rights. Creating an app that allows users to connect with each other from across the world and synthesize their knowledge is also an accomplishment: the app itself we are proud of, as well as the knowledge required that we learned.

What we learned

We learned that many problems can be overcome with the help from our follow team members. Furthermore, we learned about the inner workings of Android Studio. Perhaps most importantly, we learned that the quintessential member of the animal kingdom that represents all of our names is the prestigious and renowned auklet (to properly encompass all members of our group the world must be in plural form).

What's next for Upcycles by Hackasaurus

Our ambitious and rather lofty goal for Upcyclist is to not only add a point/reputation system that creates competition between users with color-based medals to show their ranks, but also port the app to enable cross-compatibility with other users, i.e. Apple and Windows. In the future, we want to create chatrooms for different local regions, enabling users to synthesize their ideas more efficiently as well as enable users to follow other users they're interested in and watch those posts. We look towards enabling a commenting feature, so that users can comment on other user's posts in order to share their opinions. Of course, we will always seek to improve the app and its efficiency as well as streamline its looks.
