Inspiration

The inspiration for Unyanzvi 2 Mari (U2M) comes from a struggle we’ve observed in our families, neighbourhoods, and communities across Africa: people are learning skills, but those skills are not turning into income.

Young people work hard to obtain certificates, attend digital courses, and join training programs—yet they still end up unemployed or underpaid. Meanwhile, small businesses desperately need digital assistance but struggle to find trustworthy, work-ready talent.

This highlighted a clear gap: Skills development and employment existed in two separate silos.

U2M was inspired by the belief that Africans don’t just need education; we need a direct path from unyanzvi (skills) to mari (income)—a bridge. Our goal is to create a complete ecosystem that guides individuals from learning to practising, obtaining certification, and ultimately earning an income.

What It Does!

Unyanzvi 2 Mari (U2M) is an all-in-one platform that:

Teaches digital skills using AI tutors that explain concepts in simple, relatable terms. Offers hands-on practice through virtual sandboxes that simulate real work environments. Provides trade tests and certification to validate practical abilities. Connects certified learners with paid tasks posted by businesses and clients.

  • Facilitates direct payments into EcoCash wallets for convenience and trust.
  • Delivers consultancy services to clients who need assistance with their digital needs.

Learning and certification are always free, and access to tasks includes a 1-month free trial.

U2M breaks down the barriers between education and employment—facilitating everything in a single journey.

How We Built It

We built U2M with one guiding principle: keeping everything connected and accessible to African learners.

  • We developed an AI learning engine that adapts to each user's pace.
  • We designed virtual sandbox environments for real-life practice in coding, marketing, design, data work, and more.
  • We created a certification layer that assesses practical skills rather than mere memorisation.
  • We established a task marketplace that automatically unlocks once a learner becomes certified.
  • We integrated EcoCash to ensure easy earning and withdrawal of funds.
  • We added a consultancy module to support businesses and help them leverage digital talent.

Each component flows seamlessly into the next, ensuring users never feel lost or stuck.

**Challenges We Faced

Building U2M presented several challenges:

  • Merging learning and employment in one platform required designing systems that communicate seamlessly with each other.
  • Many users rely on mobile devices and limited data, making performance and accessibility constant priorities.
  • Creating hands-on sandboxes that run efficiently on the cloud involved significant technical effort.
  • Ensuring fair and scalable certification demanded a balance between challenge and accessibility.
  • EcoCash integration required strict compliance and secure API handling.
  • Training AI to understand local African contexts—including our examples, industries, and language styles—needed additional work.

Every challenge brought us closer to creating a platform that truly serves our communities.

Accomplishments We’re Proud Of

  • Developing a platform that successfully links skills to income—not just certificates.
  • Designing a practical learning experience with sandbox environments that mimic real jobs.
  • Offering education and certification for free so that no one is excluded for financial reasons.
  • Integrating EcoCash payouts, which aligns perfectly with how many Africans transact daily.
  • Creating a system that delivers first real digital jobs, sometimes within weeks of completing training.
  • Tailoring our solution to African realities, rather than copying a model from elsewhere.

These milestones remind us why U2M is important.

What We Learned

We discovered that:

  • People don’t just want digital skills—they aspire to a future where those skills can support their families.
  • AI can be an effective tutor when guided appropriately.
  • Practical learning, rather than theoretical knowledge, builds confidence.
  • Certifications only matter if they lead to real opportunities.
  • African learners require tools that operate on low data usage, minimal resources, and mobile devices.
  • Simple, patient, and culturally aware design makes learning feel less intimidating.

We also learned how to measure skill readiness using a weighted model:

\[ \text{Readiness} = 0.4K + 0.4P + 0.2T ]

This ensures fairness for all learners.

What's Next for Unyanzvi 2 Mari (U2M)

Our journey is just beginning. Next, we plan to:

  • Introduce more digital career paths, including AI, cybersecurity, advanced design, and business automation.
  • Expand the task marketplace to feature larger and long-term projects.
  • Partner with African SMEs, hubs, and schools to create more opportunities.
  • Launch a mobile app for easier access.
  • Integrate additional payment options beyond EcoCash.
