Inspiration

The internet is not always a safe place for people who have suffered trauma of any degree. Often these people are surprised by certain words that may trigger unwanted memories or emotions tied to this trauma. Triggers can be any word or phrase - such as "cancer" or "rape". We want to make the internet a safe space for everyone.

What it does

After installing the Chrome extension, the user inputs certain words or phrases that may be triggers for them. Untriggered scans each page the user visits and warns the user of a potential trigger before the user can view the page. Ultimately, the user can decide whether they want to continue onto the page or not. This way the user has full control of their online experience.

How we built it

This was built using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON, and Chrome.

Challenges we ran into

Neither of us had experience with JavaScript, JSON, or Chrome - let alone building a Chrome extension. We had to put in a lot of research and seek out resources that enabled us to finish the project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud that, with little experience with these languages, we were able to complete the extension and have it fully running. Untriggered is already on the Google Chrome Web Store and available for user download now.

What we learned

How to find and use resources such as sample open source projects to get us started. We also learned quite a bit of JavaScript and JSON along the way.

What's next for Untriggered

It is already out on the Google Chrome Web Store and available for download. We hope to continue the project by fine-tuning it.
