Inspiration

During my studies for the IB Exams while at Sheridan College, I hooked up my Pomodoro timer i made in another hackathon up on the TV in the private rooms at the study commons. This different more minimalistic approach that doesn't require a timer is another great alternative for the Pomodoro timer, as you can disable irrelevant information and just focus on the calmness of your dashboard.

What it does

It is a simple study dashboard with a task feature that allows you to clear tasks during your study session, while also being hideable to create a simple screen that shows an inspirational message while you work, without the clutter in the way

How we built it

Using HTML/CSS/TypeScript for the front-end on GitHub Pages, using our .xyz domain. The backend was programmed with MongoDB and Express.js (on localhost).

Challenges we ran into

Time limit preventing us from completing essential features between the frontend and the backend such as getting tasks saved to the server as well as being able to delete tasks.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Being able to somewhat combine frontend and backend.
  • Clean and modern frontend
  • Easy to use backend

What we learned

We learnt that a good work environment is essential for studying, completing projects and participating in a Hackathon. This allows you to work more productively and get your work done more efficiently. Additionally, try not to go with more complicated solutions when the easier ones can be done quicker (e.g. using cache instead of MongoDB & Discord login)

What's next for FocusFrame - The Red Alliance

Migrating all backend code to a dedicated server so we aren't limited to localhost, as well as a Discord login feature and the feature to delete tasks.
