Inspiration

Our team of four developers - Ansh, Justin, Aya, and Sibaie - were thrilled to participate in the 2023 Pickhacks event. Not only because it is a competitive event, but because we wanted to learn new things and challenge ourselves. We think that education is the key to progress. Thus, we created a game that could help raise awareness for environmental problems. We wanted to develop an exciting game that would not only entertain but also educate players on the importance of environmental conservation.

What it does

Our game's objective is to avoid obstacles while answering questions to stay alive. We aimed to create a fun and challenging experience that everyone can enjoy and learn.

How we built it

Our team had different skills, so we divided the work among ourselves. Ansh and Aya worked on the game's design and user experience(Figma, Canva), while Justin and Sibaie focused on programming and developing the game's logic(GDScript, Godot engine).

Challenges we ran into

One of the most significant challenges we faced was learning the new programming language and implementing the Godot game engine. Every time we wanted to add something new, we had some sort of problem arise. However, we were able to solve the problems by debugging our code and rewriting it from scratch.

We wanted to create a game that would be challenging yet fun to play. We had to make sure that the game's mechanics were engaging enough to keep players hooked. A problem we encountered while rendering collisions was developing a dynamic hitbox for the enemies. We were not able to properly make the hitbox match the enemies.

Another challenge was time management. Since this was a new programming language we had to learn it fast. We only had a limited amount of time to develop the game, and we had to make sure that we met the deadline. We put in hours of hard work and dedication, and we were pleased with the final product.

We did not know how to use GitHub so we had to learn how to push and pull repositories and add readme files.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of learning Godot and Godot Script within a demanding time frame and actually being able to build a small game. We also learned how to use GitHub to commit to a repository and make a creative readme file. Along with GitHub and Godot, we also used other tools and websites to complete our game, such as Canva and Figma software to help us with our designs. This experience has not only enhanced our technical abilities but also strengthened our teamwork. We had so much fun! We look forward to applying our new knowledge to future projects.

What we learned

We have learned to work in a team as four individuals but driven by the same goal! Moreover, we learned that perseverance could push through every challenge as we rewrote our code a million times and redid the design not fewer times. We understood the value of communication and curiosity as mentors helped us build this amazing game and actually gave us ideas for a game engine. The most important thing that we learned, and we all agree, is that innovation should be meaningful and fun!

What's next for Hello, Earther!

-Coding the questions into the demo and making the automatically renew the questions each week. Creating more environmental problems! So people will learn about more new things -We have an extension idea of spending the coins you earned in the game to help donate actual charities. For that we need sponsors and more time to develop game into a more interactive application.
