SkyLine

Inspiration

On a team, updates about one project end up spread across Slack, email, and DMs. Project managers have to dig through all of it to figure out what’s done, what’s late, and what’s missing. Things slip through, like a deadline that quietly moved or a task nobody picked up. We wanted to make that easier to see. We were inspired by the Atlanta skyline at night and thought it would be cool if each project was a building that lit up as work got done.

What it does

SkyLine is a dashboard for project managers, running on MacBook's menu bar, so they can easily click it without searching through numerous tabs. It connects to Slack and Gmail and uses AI to find tasks, deadlines, owners, and blockers in team conversations. It also points out missing info, like a task with no owner or no due date. Each project shows up as a building in a city. The windows light up as tasks are finished, and the building catches fire if something is overdue or blocked. When a deadline is at risk, SkyLine lets the right people know and suggests what to do next.

Challenges we ran into

We first planned to use Outlook instead of Gmail for email integration, but we ran into access issues. So, we switched to using Gmail, with plans of integration Outlook in the future. In addition, we also had trouble matching messages to projects. People talk about the same project in different places and in different words. At first the AI would treat these as separate projects, so we had to work on getting it to tell when two messages were about the same thing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of building a working app with a lot of moving parts in 24 hours, especially since it was the first hackathon for several of our team members. Getting all of that to work together in such a short time was a lot, and we’re really happy with how it turned out.
