Inspiration
Our project (try it here!) was inspired by the darkest corner of the internet - Omegle. Of course, Omegle is filled with hatred and festering darkness beyond anything previously known to mankind.
Our idea was to create a system to get a little confidence boost, while also sharing your own kind messages with the world.
What does it do?!
Our site allows you to enter a kind message that will perhaps cheer somebody up! Then, you can recieve a random message designed to make your day! Your message is written just for you and will be deleted right after you see it! (It makes it a little more personal that way, you know?)
Tough challenges
Our toughest challenges were learning to overcome the learning curve of the back-end development, as well as learning the ins-and-outs of responsive web design. Also, this is our first hackathon and so we had a bit of a stressful time working under a time constraint.
Accomplishments
We're proud of the way the the website looks, because we spent a long time on the design. The back-end was a blast to create and it was a lot of fun seeing the website come together in the end. Also, all of the messages are passed through a filter to detect harmful language. If it is detected, it is sent to our admin panel for review, which is a feature that we're proud of as well.
What we learned
As a team, we started out with almost no knowledge of git or how the GitHub system works, but we figured it out and it added a lot to our workflow. Furthermore, this was our first time ever working with Django, and for some, Python! There was a pretty steep learning curve, but luckily we had each other there to help research and binge-read documentation. Bootstrap was also new, so we had a bit of a problem implementing that correctly. Making the site more responsive will be a new goal for the future.
