Inspiration

The inspiration behind Unstory was to create a dedicated, safe, and verified social network tailored specifically for college students. Recognizing the challenges students face with generic social platforms—such as fake profiles, distractions, and lack of academic focus—we aimed to build a community that fosters meaningful connections, academic collaboration, and safe interaction. The goal was to empower students to share, learn, and thrive within their college environment, enhancing both their academic and social experiences.

What it does

Unstory is a social network exclusively for verified college students. It connects students with peers from their own campus and other universities nationwide. Key features include the formation of study groups, secure and safe dating, real conversations focused on college life, and spaces to share academic resources and seek help. By ensuring only verified students can join, it eliminates spam and fake profiles, creating a trustworthy and focused platform that prioritizes privacy, speed, and real engagement.

How we built it

We built Unstory with a focus on verification through .edu emails to ensure authenticity and trust. The platform is optimized for speed with real-time updates and seamless interactions to provide a smooth user experience. Privacy is a cornerstone; no user data is sold or tracked, ensuring GDPR compliance. We implemented security and safety features to protect users, especially in the dating space. The technology stack was chosen to support real-time collaboration features such as study groups, academic discussions, and user-generated content, all tailored toward fostering a vibrant college community.

Challenges we ran into

One significant challenge was balancing the need for a secure verification process while maintaining ease of access for users across different colleges. Ensuring privacy and data protection while offering features like real-time updates and chat posed technical complexities. Creating a safe dating environment within a student network required careful implementation of safety features and moderation. Additionally, scaling the system to support nationwide student communities without compromising performance was a considerable engineering challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have built a platform exclusively for verified college students that fosters authentic interactions, free of spam or fake profiles. The rapid adoption by thousands of students and the formation of numerous active study groups and academic circles demonstrates the value Unstory provides. We successfully integrated privacy-first principles and GDPR compliance while maintaining high performance and 99% uptime. Building a safe dating feature within a specialized community setting is another milestone we highly value.

What we learned

We learned the critical importance of verification and privacy in building a trusted social network, particularly for younger users. User feedback highlighted the value of academic collaboration spaces, shaping our focus on study groups and resource sharing. Balancing safety and usability, especially in features like dating, requires constant iteration and thoughtful design. We also discovered that building a fast, reliable platform with real-time interactions demands strong backend infrastructure and optimization strategies.

What's next for Unstory

Looking ahead, Unstory aims to expand its reach by welcoming more campuses and enhancing cross-university collaboration features. We plan to introduce more personalized academic tools and resources, such as tutoring matches and course-specific forums. Improving AI-driven moderation and safety features will remain a priority to ensure user well-being. Additionally, we are exploring partnerships with educational institutions to integrate Unstory more deeply into college life, making it an indispensable part of the student experience.
