Inspiration
In a world driven by constant notifications, open browser tabs, and information overload, our minds often run a million tabs at once. Overthinkers, night-time ruminators, and busy professionals frequently mistake looping anxiety for actual problem-solving. The inspiration behind Unspool came from a simple realization: when mental clutter and overwhelm creep in, you don't need another complex, high-pressure productivity tracker—you need a safe, private, and distraction-free space to empty your head, separate the noise from reality, and find your calm.
What it does
Unspool acts as a physical filter and cognitive offloading tool for your brain using a streamlined, intentional routine:
Time-Aware Greetings: Greets you warmly with a soothing, time-of-day-dependent message and micro-copy designed to settle your nervous system right when you open the app.
The Brain Dump: A distraction-free, timed journaling space with zero structure or clutter, allowing users to type out every chaotic thought, task, or "what-if" scenario until their mind feels light. Guides you through raw thoughts one by one, allowing you to use your preferred options to separate what you can handle from what you can't—turning manageable thoughts into Actionable tasks or parking uncontrollable worries.
The Parking Lot: A secure storage space for your parked thoughts that remains safely locked away outside of your designated custom "Worry Window," keeping intrusive thoughts from disrupting your focus or sleep.
Flexible Access & Settings: Offers robust local data management (import/export), theme switching, custom worry window scheduling, and flexible subscription tiers (monthly, annually, or lifetime purchase).
How we built it
Unspool was built from the ground up as a local-first mobile application using Flutter for a seamless, cross-platform user interface adhering to a minimalist parchment-and-sage aesthetic.
State Management: Powered by Flutter Riverpod to ensure responsive state handling and persistent in-session states.
Local Architecture: Built with a high-performance local database to guarantee that all user thoughts and tasks remain entirely on-device.
UI/UX Design: Designed with a focus on breathable whitespace, custom dark/light color schemes , highly rounded cards, and zero social or cloud noise.
Challenges we ran into
State Persistence vs. Time Logic: Keeping the time-of-day greetings fresh without letting them randomly shuffle every single time a user navigated away from and back to the screen required designing a clean provider/service pattern to persist state accurately.
Balancing Minimalism with Functionality: Ensuring that deep features like time-locked vaults, sorting sieves, and subscription status badges remained hidden behind an uncluttered, stress-free interface without overwhelming the user.
Local-First Constraints: Architecting the database and import/export flows to be entirely client-side while maintaining high speed and data integrity without cloud infrastructure.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully shipping a fully functional, highly polished 4-screen production app (Home, Brain Dump, Vault, and Settings) that stays true to its core therapeutic mission.
Achieving a serene, cohesive "Calm Mindset" design language with custom dark and light modes, smooth micro-interactions, and a unique time-of-day greeting engine.
Implementing a secure, time-locked "Worry Window" mechanism that genuinely aids cognitive offloading and prevents night-time rumination.
What we learned
Less is More in UX: Designing for anxiety-relief taught us that every pixel matters; removing visual clutter, harsh contrast, and unnecessary notifications directly influences the user's emotional state.
The Power of Local-First Design: Prioritizing local storage not only solves privacy concerns entirely but also streamlines app performance and reliability, proving that cloud sync isn't always necessary for a deeply personal tool.
What's next for Unspool
Expanded Customization: Introducing customizable ambient soundscapes and deeper scheduling options for personalized worry windows.
Local Insights: Adding privacy-first, on-device pattern tracking to help users visualize their mental clarity trends over time.
Cross-Platform Refinement: Expanding the local-first database migration tools to ensure seamless data backups directly controlled by the user.
