Inspiration

Unspoken was inspired by how many people struggle to express emotions and need a safe, non-judgmental space. I wanted to create a platform where users can share feelings without pressure to explain everything in words.

What it does

Unspoken helps users express and understand their emotions in a safe, non-judgmental way. It lets people share how they feel using a mood slider, images, or simple chat, and responds with gentle, human-like support and guided reflection—without forcing words or using external AI.

How we built it

I built the app using React (Vite) with state-based flow, a mood slider, and a locally implemented chatbot that responds empathetically using predefined emotion detection—ensuring privacy and security.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was making chatbot responses feel human without AI APIs and designing emotionally safe interactions while avoiding clinical or judgmental language.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Building a fully functional empathy-focused application without external AI services, while still making interactions feel human, supportive, and emotionally safe.

What we learned

Empathy in technology isn’t about complex AI — it’s about thoughtful design, tone, pacing, and trust. Even simple logic can create meaningful emotional support when built with care.

What's next for Unspoken

Voice-based expression Drawing / sketch reflection tools Improved emotion mapping Optional anonymous peer support Multilingual and cultural adaptations
