Inspiration

The inspiration behind Unplugged came from the recent implementation of phone restrictions in Texas public schools. After students were no longer allowed to use personal devices during the school day, I noticed a significant improvement in focus and classroom engagement.

However, I began to wonder whether students were compensating for the lost phone time once they returned home. To investigate this, I conducted approximately 55 student surveys and discovered that many students spend three to five hours on social media after school. This excessive screen time negatively impacts productivity, mental health, and overall well-being.

Unplugged was created to address this problem by helping students maintain the focus they gain at school and carry it into their home environments.

What it does

Unplugged is an AI-powered focus and wellness app designed to help students manage digital distractions at home and build healthier, more productive habits.

The app combines personalized AI focus plans, guided mindfulness tools, study resources, and interactive mental training to transform the smartphone from a source of distraction into a tool for balance, discipline, and productivity.

Features include:

  • AI-generated focus plans
  • Focus timers and productivity tools
  • Guided breathing and mindfulness exercises
  • Group study sessions
  • Interactive cognitive exercises
  • Mental sharpness tests
  • Progress tracking and behavioral insights

By integrating productivity, wellness, and AI into a single platform, Unplugged helps students build long-term focus habits.

How we built it

Unplugged was developed using TypeScript and CSS to create a responsive and modern user experience. The application's interface was designed with an emphasis on simplicity, accessibility, and minimal distractions.

Google Firebase is used to securely store user information, progress data, and personalization settings. Lightweight machine learning algorithms written in Python generate personalized focus plans and recommendations based on user responses and behavioral patterns.

The application was prototyped, tested, and refined through modern design and development tools, with Android Studio used for testing and future deployment planning.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing personalization with simplicity. Many productivity applications overwhelm users with features, while others provide only basic timers.

Another challenge was designing AI recommendations that feel helpful rather than intrusive. The goal was to create an experience that supports students without becoming another source of notifications or distractions.

Collecting meaningful survey data and translating student feedback into practical features also required multiple iterations and revisions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that Unplugged addresses a real problem affecting students today. The project was inspired by actual student experiences and validated through survey data.

Some accomplishments include:

  • Surveying over 55 students to identify the problem.
  • Designing a complete user interface focused on simplicity.
  • Developing AI-powered personalization features.
  • Integrating wellness, productivity, and focus tools into one platform.
  • Creating a solution that encourages healthier technology habits.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we learned that productivity is not simply about working harder. Focus, mental wellness, and digital habits all play an important role in academic success.

We also learned how artificial intelligence can be used responsibly to provide personalized recommendations while respecting user privacy. Additionally, the project strengthened our understanding of user-centered design, behavioral psychology, and software development.

What's next for Unplugged

Unplugged currently exists as a working prototype, but there are several future improvements planned.

Future goals include:

  • Expanding to both iOS and Android platforms.
  • Adding adaptive AI coaching and focus forecasting.
  • Integrating wearable device support.
  • Creating collaborative study rooms and accountability groups.
  • Expanding the platform to support college students and working professionals.

Ultimately, the goal of Unplugged is to help people build healthier relationships with technology and focus on what truly matters.
