Unpack an App for Mental Health Screening and Resources

Inspiration

Every member of our team has seen several mental health disorders go unchecked if that be in ourselves or the people around us. We firmly believe that Mental disorders should be on the same level of importance as physical ones. We are hoping that our App will bridge that gap and open people up to mental health care.

What it does

Our app has three main functions. The first one is a mental health screener that we had developed that will tell the user what disorder we think they have. With the information from the screener we will direct the user to relevant resource pages. The resource pages contain information like symptoms and websites to better understand the condition. The last function is to direct the user to clinics in their area that specialize in the care they need.

How we built it

We used Android Studio to develop the application.

Challenges we ran into

Challenges we ran into were figuring out how to access the JSON file from android studio and figuring out how the answers of each questions would weigh. The weights were made created by hand to select what disorder one might have. This option worked as a short term solution to make the the questionnaire a viable product.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We accomplished using different sources to compile a questionnaire. We were able to do this while half the team were new to Android Studio and the other half only had moderate experience. Completing a decently sized project that included research was itself an achievement for us all.

What we learned

The majority of the team learned how to use Android Studio and the process of using Git and GitHub. We also learned about symptoms of mental health while researching these disorders.

What's next for Unpack an App for Mental Health Screening and Resources

The next major task for this project would be to invest time in finding pattern of symptoms for each disorder and be able to correctly (or more accurately) predict the user's psyche. This would most likely require us to use some form of Machine Learning; either a Neural Network or a Decision Tree to help us either score a person's result better or generate a path of questions.

Another expansion to this project would be to figure out how to analyze free response questions to determine a user's psyche.
